I purchased this book for two things, it's small size, and it's high reviews. It's one of the most useful purchases of the Dover science and engineering series I've had in supplementing my formal education. As I'm finishing the first year of a general chemistry sequence, I found reading this book to be an extremely useful review. It's prose is considerably more engaging, and the historical narrative is much, much, much more clearly laid out than in almost any college text. That point is useful in that it helps put into perspective what only limited lab time can barely illuminate. I didn't quite grasp the ingenuity of the experiments and the magnitude of the breakthroughs in my assigned textbook. The narrative was lost in the prose of a modern text, as was some of the continuity of the subject in between problem sets and tests. But The Development of Chemical Principles was a great supplement, and it's practice problems are useful in gauging your knowledge. I'll agree here with other reviewers that it seems the average knowledge of the average State U student doesn't seem to be quite what it used to be a half century ago. I'm glad I know that, it's a strong motivator.As many students studying general chemistry are also studying calculus and physics, Dover has other books which are similarly sized for easy transport and similarly old to provide a window into what previous students learned and knew. Mechanics by Dover was a great supplement to my mechanics course, as was The Essential Calculus. Great books at a great price, if you're paying hundreds, even thousands of dollars for an education, do not pass up these cheap books to further yourself.

Another gem from Dover books!In nine chapters and 384 pages, we have an excellent undergraduate study in the noble science of chemistry.This was once an actual college text. Although published in 1969, the vast majority of the data within is still current. In fact, for its size, this volume is not only more compact, it contains as much if not more information as a contemporary text. A current textbook will cost you over $100, ...and two years later you will find the SAME text for $5 in the used-book store!Yes, for its small size, this book contains a large quantity of information that you will not see in a first-year General Chemistry text. Much of the data within barely covered in the texts for the advanced courses.Dover Books also publishes a much thicker text by Linus Pauling, that you may also find highly useful, if you enjoy this one.

Generally the old school chemists are steeped in the fundamentals, to an extent that we youngsters may never be. In part this is due to deficiencies in modern chemistry textbooks that sacrifice coverage of the basics for the flashy color photos and bulleted lists that adorn and crowd the pages of the unending flow of annual "new and improved" editions. Most new editions come with the justification that they include whatever material is "hot" at the moment, and sometimes more color. Chemistry may have changed a lot in the time since this book was first published, but the fundamentals that it covers (very clearly and concisely by the way) remain the same (which is an important reason why chemistry is a science). A reason why this book remains available in reprint edition is because it still has value. Most modern texts are essentially worthless (at least as judged by college bookstore buyback) once a new edition is released. This book is a bargain, and is highly recommended to anyone wanting to know more about chemistry. I used this book as a supplement to organic chem, p-chem and inorganic chem courses, and it served me well.
