Good read for beginners. Fun too. I built a few basic projects and I am getting ready to do more!
Finally, an easy to follow book! LOVE IT!
As someone who learned mainly by trial and error, let me say that any novice would be well-advised to read this book before attempting any projects and going the trial and error route like I did. The book covers all the basics and while soldering is not rocket science, success demands that it be done properly, with the right kind of soldering iron, tools/accessories and procedures. This book will give you all the information you need. There's also plenty of color pictures that provide helpful guides and examples. It's organized well, and easy to understand. I'd say anyone who is new to soldering will definitely benefit from this book and it's a handy thing to keep on hand as a refresher, too.The only quibble I had, a minor one, is the author seem to waffle on the use of lead-free solder. While he warns of the dangers of lead-based solder, he also says he prefers it for his own use and says how it is more difficult to use lead-free solder because of the higher temperatures required. For a beginner I think it is easier to use lead-based (60/40) solder and take the easy precautions the author mentions when using it. But like I said, that's a minor quibble. This book is a great, worthwhile resource.
Although I have built computers for years and worked on electrical devices, I am sad to admit that I never took the time to get the hang of soldering. I have done a few very easy things, but never really learned how to do a good job of it. This book seemed like the perfect introduction. Let's see how it measures up.WHAT IS THIS BOOK LIKE?First of all, this is an introductory book. It is not comprehensive, but an introduction on how to do basic electrical and mechanical things. The first 44 pages are a good explanation of tools, accessories and photos of what you will want to be familiar with in all sorts of soldering situations. There is a nice project that is simple that helps you understand how to build a simple circuit. The materials are not hard to get and the materials list is complete so you can check off what you need to be sure you have it all when you want to start the project. The last third of the book is devoted to learning how to solder basic electronic components, circuit boards, splice and connect wires, and finishing your work properly. There is a section on fixing mistakes and troubleshooting, and the very end has some introduction to more advanced soldering of surface mount devices (SMD). There are lots of photos and hints to make your work high quality and effective.HOW DID I FIND THIS BOOK IN HELPING MEI really found this book to be helpful. Most of my desire was for circuit boards but I really enjoyed learning the basics of the circuit and how to use the tools that I have had for a long time in my computer kit. The book is an excellent introduction and took the mystery out of soldering. I really got a lot out of it and my daughter, an aspiring electronics wiz is now eyeing the book as well.My daughter is more of an auditory learner and I am a visual learner and this book works well for both of us. There are lots of photos that help visually to grasp the concepts.WHO MIGHT LIKE THIS BOOK?Not only would this be great for adults like me who never took the time to learn soldering, but it would be great for 4-H projects, computer classes, homeschooling, extra curricular study beyond school, and a way to help those who tend to like tinker to give them a taste of soldering and see if they can incorporate it into fine work that they might do in the future.THE BOTTOM LINEThere are many occasions for simple soldering. This book helps you get your feet wet and learn the basics of this very useful topic. Lots of photos and clear explanations make this book appropriate for adults and teens alike. It is a great skill to be familiar with.MY RATINGFIVE stars for this. It is just what I needed to get me going with soldering. I also am impressed with how easy my teenage daughter grasped the book and took off with it as well.
Finally a reasonable book that explains soldering in simple terms for newbies.I read it with my 10 year old daughter that is new to the electronic world. The book is clear and concise and contains many pictures. After describing some of the basic tools and material needed for soldering, the author describes the basic technics of soldering, common mistakes and how to solve them. The last chapter describe SMD soldering for those interested.I would have given it 5 stars if there was more picture around in the second chapter around the actual basic soldering gesture. I also thing that the long debate around leaded vs unleaded solder could have been treated in a less wishy washy way. The author should state his opinion more clearly on the topic.
This book is good if you are a total beginner because it starts with ground zero and explains everything you need to know to be able to solder. On the other hand if you are one who is experienced this is a good reference manual for things you may have forgotten or need to know about the process.
