I have over the last 45 years had to deal with chronic migraine headaches. Over the last 20 years or so I have practiced asanas and breathing associated with yoga. Have read more literature on the subjects than I care to mention. I read non-fiction in the same way as I read newspapers, fleetingly. This work is probably the most interesting, informative and helpful that I have found and have read every single word, cover to cover, twice over. I recommend this book to everyone, not only to those who endure certain conditions but even those that feel they don't require it. The importance of breath and the correct way to breathe is better expressed than anything I have come across!
Good book. seems like it has more content on restorative yoga poses than it does breathing techniques. A lot on anatomy and theory too. I thought it was going to be more of a collection of breath techniques for different ailments and areas of concern. I guess it does have alot that. I think if you are a yoga teacher a lot of the material will be familiar, pretty basic material. I was looking learn new techniques beyond alternate nostril breathing, lions breath, breath of fire, etc. I’m giving it 4 stars because the content is essential to wellness and self care. The techniques taught in this book are priceless, and life changing. It teaches ways to cool the body, relieve anxiety, energy the body, relieve congestion, release tension, balance out the brain, relieve stress, help center and more. Again, I just thought it was going to be different, beyond what I learned in yoga teacher training.
Having chronic breathing problems, I've read a lot of books about self-help breathing techniques. This is one of the best, as it has info even I hadn't read before. For starters, when people try to breathe properly from the diaphragm (instead of from the upper chest), they can develop an equally bad habit of tightening other chest muscles, to stop the upper-chest breathing. The author stresses the importance of allowing the entire body to be part of the breathing cycle, and she gives many exercises to help the reader do just that. The black-and-white photos and diagrams are helpful learning aids, as well.
This is an excellent book that can be helpful to ANYONE who breathes. It's especially helpful to people in helping professions including medicine, psychotherapy, yoga, massage therapists, etc. I highly recommend it.
Love this book! Not just great for those practicing yoga but, anyone with breathing problems or health issues could benefit from reading this book and adopting these techniques!
Breathing and having a flex able spine is the key to good health and dealing with the ageing process. I have found that flexing the spine and breathing as mentioned on pages 110 & 111 along with standing on a whole body vibration platform for 10 minutes has helped me at age 77 to take a Kenneth Copper fitness test at my Golds gym and subtract 25 years from my age and score in the top 10% using the age 52, this one Technique alone has a lot to do with my fitness and well being.
This is a thoughtful, insightful and incredibly useful book. Love it and love all the breath inquiries. Highly recommend this. I am a yoga teacher and I teach breathing at my massage school. This book is a must for all people but especially those in the healing arts.
