There's a lot to do in Reno, much of which you can't do elsewhere. I won't elaborate on all that is available. If you live, or travel to the Reno area, you probably already know about the various opportunities that await the tourist with lots of money and poor math skills. What you may not know is that over the years the city and surrounding communities have spent a lot of time building urban greenbelts along the Truckee River and in various wildlife refugees to the north and south of the Biggest Little City. Hiking opportunities are abundant but few books have explored all that are available. In this new Best Easy Day Hikes book, veteran author Tracy Salcedo Chourre offers a glimpse of some of the areas you can explore on foot if you get tired of tables, slots, and other attractions. As she notes in the preface, if these particular trails are not enough, then you can almost always find additional hikes or add miles to her suggested routes at every locale.One of the problems with the best easy day hikes series is the question of just what an easy hike is. Different authors have different perspectives, and even within the same book, the length and difficulty of hikes will vary. In the Reno area, Salcedo Chourre takes a very conservative approach to what constitutes an easy hike. 13 of the 18 routes she describes are two miles or less. But if you want more, her sketch maps show connecting trails so you can easily make 1 mile into 3 or more. But I like the book as it is. I use books like this one to find routes I can share with my wife who, after two auto accidents and unhealed injuries cannot hike as far as she used to. But she still likes to get out on shorter hikes and books like this one provide lots of options for exploration. Readers will also find some longer hikes, such as the 5.6 mile "Hole in the Wall" route. And, as with all books in this series, you will also find detailed driving directions (and GPS coordinates) to every trail head, sketch maps, and a good description of the route itself.My only complaint about this book, such as it is, is the amount of overlap between it and the author's larger guide to hiking in the Reno Tahoe area. In fairness, most Falcon authors excerpt some of their works to create guides for the Best Easy Day Hikes series, though Salcedo Chourre is usually something of an exception to this rule. She often writes her books in this series that stand on their own. But for me, I simply prefer the format of the larger book, with beautiful glossy pictures and larger maps. So if you only want short hikes in the Reno area, say for a visit to the city, then this book is fine, but if you really want to explore this part of western Nevada, be sure to get the larger title by the same author.

Based on my experience with other books in this series ("Best Easy Day Hikes") I had expected some hikes that would be farther afield, longer, and more extensive. As the trail descriptions make clear, however, some of these trails are simply popular trails in public parks, and extend through suburban subdivisions. I did choose the hike that looked most challenging, the last in the book ("Fay Luther Interpretive Loop"), and was entirely happy with my hike (and I was able to continue much farther in the trail system than this specific hike). I was surprised to find that the trail was (a) better graded and maintained than the book suggested, and (b) much better shaded than the book suggested - which of course is not a bad thing, but just some extra information that I thought others might like to know. The Fay-Luther trail organization provides beautiful printed maps at the trailhead that you can carry with you or view online, which makes the experience all that much better. I'm curious why this book doesn't have any hikes in the Pyramid Lake area, which like the Fay-Luther area is not a long drive from Reno. Are there no trails at Pyramid Lake?

Love it!

I haven't explored all of the hikes, but so far, so good. The Davis Creek one is great for the early spring.
