Don’t take my rating as a bad 2.5, A Hairy Tail was a decent read, which is why it received a 2.5.The main character is Hannah and she was kind of cool. She was more interested in school and homework and schedules than summer parties and wildness, which I respected. There was actual no obvious character development from what I could see, but that was fine. Mostly because there was no need for development, it wasn’t a thirty-two chapter novel about a teenager who finds herself. It was about down-to-earth Hannah who finds something to do while she wants for the last ninety-three days of summer to end. There wasn’t much to her, since, again, this wasn’t a long novel, but it was enough.I think what I didn’t like of anything was Hannah’s mother, Coco. I didn’t appreciate that Coco was almost shaming Hannah for not liking the party scene. Multiple times she asks or tells Hannah that she isn’t normal or not doing what normal teenagers do by not enjoying parties. I have known teenagers who don’t appreciate the party part of life and it wasn’t as abnormal and unimaginable as Coco made it seem.The romance was surprisingly subtle. I thought that this was a romance story so I had expected a lot more of the romance aspect, but the ending was cute. Would I recommend A Hairy Tail? I don’t see why not. If you have an hour of your time that you won’t feel guilty about spending on a book, definitely go for it.

This book is exactly what I needed.I’ve been slipping into a reading/blogging slump for a week or two, and fighting to stay out of it, but I wrote a few poems last week and read this little short story today (along with watching soooooooo much Netflix… and Film Theory…) and I already feel so much better. I love the COYER challenge, but it’s long! I’m going to stick it out till the end. Only a couple of weeks left!It’s cute, lovable, fun….Everything you need in a little short story! The author does say as a disclaimer that this book is flash fiction, and is not meant to be a novel. I definitely appreciate that!The main character is… Well, boring!I’m not being insulting, just factual! Hannah likes school, along with organized, methodical things, and she enjoys her predictable life. When her mother forces her to get up and out of the house for the summer, she spots a volunteer opportunity at the local animal shelter.The characters are fairly stereotypical, but in a lovable way.The guy is the “hottest guy I’ve ever seen that can’t possibly be single” and also happens to be amazing and totally interested in Hannah. But it’s all about the puppies, so it’s all good, right?The writing is a little choppy at times, but it goes by quickly!The writing is simply meant to be for a short story. Things happen very quickly, and there’s not too much time spent on minute details. The story is quite cute though, and I’m a sucker for a cute puppy!Overall, it was fun to read and definitely put a smile on my face.I really can’t resist puppies. A Hairy Tale is a decent enough short story about a 15 year old who doesn't want to go to parties and hang out with other kids like her mother wants her to do. Like another reviewer I also disliked this woman who doesn't accept her daughter for who she is. If your daughter doesn't want to go to parties and when forced to go to one wants to leave when he shirt becomes see through when someone spills a drink on it, I'd think you'd be pretty happy with the choices your daughter is making. But then again at one stage Coco tells her she wants grandkids when she jokingly says she wants to become a cat lady so she's probably hoping for her to make the wrong decisions so she gets to retry influencing a new girl to be the daughter she wants. Seriously at times I had assumed it was her immature friend speaking and then realised oh right Coco is her mother.A Hairy Tail is a fairly predictable tale. The dog element is more of a prop for the realising she is worth more than her mother paints her as in other people's eyes, especially those of the opposite sex type book.

This is a great story for young people and the importance of charity work, especially for "those who cannot speak for themselves." Although it was somewhat predictable, it did show that some teens do have a very unselfish and charitable side to their personalities.I give a 4 because in the short number of pages, the lack of proofreading and editing annoys me. For the most part, I can accept British spellings, and 2 of the British spellings were correct; however, "smelt" means to refine metal or is a small fish, it is not a British or any other cultural spelling for referring to the sense of smell in either the past tense or past participial tense.Basil is spoken consistently of being a male dog, but when the woman dropped the dog off at the shelter, it is written that "when the woman dropped 'her' off at the shelter. . . ." was there a magical transformation in the little dog's gender--I doubt it.Although the story is somewhat predictable, it shows the tenacious ability that teens can possess, the believable aspects of the teenager's first date, mixed emotions with attention from a boy for the young girl's first "puppy love"--pun intended.POSSIBLE SPOILER: It was a great moving, light read (1/2-hour for me) that added a smile to the end of a long day--for both the puppy and the young teens seeing reward for their being so compassionate and caring about the puppy finding its family again!For editing/proofreading misses, I give 4-stars. Although a great read for the teenager, I think it is very uplifting for all ages, and any who love animals!
